She Believed Him

The following Thursday, Hope left work at three knowing her sister would be arriving at her apartment around five. Eve was working a half a day, then driving here and staying until Sunday morning. She’d been shocked at the length of stay and wondered if they’d get on each other’s nerves in the small space, but she was going to try her hardest to get along.

She was walking around the grocery store when her phone went off, so she reached in her purse to retrieve it and see if it was Devin texting her. She felt bad they weren’t going to see much of each other this weekend, but she’d made a promise to herself to not put a man first in her life and that meant visiting with her sister was going to be her priority for the weekend.

Besides, Devin said he understood and she believed him.

But it wasn’t Devin that was texting her. It was Sean. She wasn’t even sure why she didn’t delete his number from her phone, but there it was, him asking how she’d been and saying he missed her.

She wasn’t responding. When she was done shopping, she’d delete his number too. Maybe he’d get the hint. She’d go one further and block it first, then delete it.

But by the time she’d gotten to her car, her phone had gone off a few more times and she chose not to read the texts until she got home. If it was Devin he wouldn’t expect her to answer back right away; she didn’t always.

And she was glad she didn’t look at it in the store because it would have just gotten her more worked up when she read a few more messages from Sean that ranged from how sorry he was, to can they talk, the last one being how he still loved her.

Rather than be a coward and hope it went away, she replied back with, NO. Not interested. I’ve moved on and you should too. Don’t contact me again. She hit send, blocked his number and then went to her contacts to delete him from there. There, he was gone from her phone now and she would push it out of her mind.

By the time her food was all put away, she was calmed down and made sure her place was clean enough. Not that she thought Eve would nitpick, but she had no clue. At just twenty-five Eve always seemed more mature than most her age. Didn’t she use the word “stable” when describing her sister? It’d be like her sister to look for dust bunnies in the corner.

There weren’t any though and she sat down to wait for the knock at the door. It wasn’t even five minutes later that she jumped up when the knock sounded. She’d give her sister points for being punctual.

She opened the door and Eve stood there with a bag in her hand and the look of wanting a hug. That was strange, and she hesitated but then decided she’d make the first step.
