She Believed Him
The following Thursday, Hope left work at three knowing her sister would be arriving at her apartment around five. Eve was working a half a day, then driving here and staying until Sunday morning. Sheâd been shocked at the length of stay and wondered if theyâd get on each otherâs nerves in the small space, but she was going to try her hardest to get along.
She was walking around the grocery store when her phone went off, so she reached in her purse to retrieve it and see if it was Devin texting her. She felt bad they werenât going to see much of each other this weekend, but sheâd made a promise to herself to not put a man first in her life and that meant visiting with her sister was going to be her priority for the weekend.
Besides, Devin said he understood and she believed him.
But it wasnât Devin that was texting her. It was Sean. She wasnât even sure why she didnât delete his number from her phone, but there it was, him asking how sheâd been and saying he missed her.
She wasnât responding. When she was done shopping, sheâd delete his number too. Maybe heâd get the hint. Sheâd go one further and block it first, then delete it.
But by the time sheâd gotten to her car, her phone had gone off a few more times and she chose not to read the texts until she got home. If it was Devin he wouldnât expect her to answer back right away; she didnât always.
And she was glad she didnât look at it in the store because it would have just gotten her more worked up when she read a few more messages from Sean that ranged from how sorry he was, to can they talk, the last one being how he still loved her.
Rather than be a coward and hope it went away, she replied back with, NO. Not interested. Iâve moved on and you should too. Donât contact me again. She hit send, blocked his number and then went to her contacts to delete him from there. There, he was gone from her phone now and she would push it out of her mind.
By the time her food was all put away, she was calmed down and made sure her place was clean enough. Not that she thought Eve would nitpick, but she had no clue. At just twenty-five Eve always seemed more mature than most her age. Didnât she use the word âstableâ when describing her sister? Itâd be like her sister to look for dust bunnies in the corner.
There werenât any though and she sat down to wait for the knock at the door. It wasnât even five minutes later that she jumped up when the knock sounded. Sheâd give her sister points for being punctual.
She opened the door and Eve stood there with a bag in her hand and the look of wanting a hug. That was strange, and she hesitated but then decided sheâd make the first step.
